John Thomas Cunningham, 80, died Sunday, April 1, 2007, in Abilene.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. Burial will be in Tuscola Cemetery at a later date.

Born in Tuscola, Texas on September 5, 1926, he was the son of John O. and Dorothy Doby Cunningham. After graduation from Jim Ned High School, he attended McMurry College. He was a U. S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II in the Pacific until 1946.

Mr. Cunningham was assistant general agent for Acme (1950-55) and freight agent for Santa Fe Trail (1955-59) andand P. He was later parts and service manager for Consolidated Equipment and parts manager for Taylor County Ford Tractor for many years. After retirement he worked for Reeder Auto Supply. He was a lifelong resident of the Abilene area.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Tuscola and a former vice president of First State Bank of Tuscola. Mr. Cunningham served for nine years on the Jim Ned School Board and for several years on the Tuscola Water District Board.

John married Sandy McDonald on January 31, 1963, in Abilene.

His parents and a sister, Shirley Ungerer, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy, of Abilene; son, David Cunningham and wife, Tricia, of Merkel; daughter, Emily Cunningham of Abilene; and five grandchildren, Stephanie Bowles and husband, Shaun, Jeff Cunningham, Aaron Cunningham, Josh Cunningham and Ashley Cunningham. John is also survived by three sisters, Becky Powell and Ruth Scott both of Abilene, and Lou Ann Wallace of Arlington, and several nieces and nephews.
